Lease or buy a car: which actually costs less?

By Arpit Patel

Leasing almost always shows a lower monthly payment than buying — and that lower number fools a lot of people. A smaller payment isn't the same as a lower cost, because at the end of a lease you walk away owning nothing.

What you're actually paying for

When you lease, you pay for the car's depreciation during the lease term — the value it loses while you drive it — plus a rent charge (interest). At the end you hand it back. That's why the monthly payment is lower: you're only financing part of the car's value, not all of it. But the payments never stop, because you never own anything.

When you buy, you pay for the whole car — in cash or financed — and you own an asset at the end with real resale value. If you finance, the monthly payment is higher, but once the loan is done you drive payment-free, and the car is still worth something.

The core trade-off

Leasing buys a lower monthly cost and a new car every few years, at the price of never building equity, accepting mileage limits, and always having a payment. Buying costs more per month while financed, but builds equity, has no mileage cap, and eventually frees you from payments entirely.

Why the long run favours buying

Stretch the timeline out and buying almost always wins. Keep a purchased car for eight to ten years and you get several years of no payments at all after the loan is paid off — and those payment-free years easily outweigh the lower monthly cost of leasing. Leasing only competes financially if you genuinely want a new car every two or three years and would never keep one long-term; in that narrow case the lower payments and hassle-free turnover can be worth the premium.

A lease optimises the monthly payment. Buying and keeping the car optimises the total cost. Decide which one you actually care about before you compare quotes.

The hidden costs of leasing

Before you're swayed by the payment, account for what leases add on: mileage-overage fees if you drive more than the contract allows, wear-and-tear charges on return, a disposition fee to hand the car back, and the simple fact that you're in a permanent payment cycle — the moment one lease ends, the next begins. For business use the tax treatment can shift the maths, but for most personal buyers who keep their cars, financing and then driving payment-free is the cheaper path.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to lease or buy a car?

Over the long run, buying and keeping the car is almost always cheaper, because you eventually stop making payments while still owning a car with resale value. Leasing has a lower monthly payment but never ends and leaves you with nothing.

Why are lease payments lower than loan payments?

Because a lease only finances the car's depreciation during the term plus interest, not the entire value of the car. You're paying for the portion of the car you 'use up,' which is less than buying it outright.

Is leasing ever the better choice?

Yes — if you want a new car every two or three years, value predictable costs and minimal hassle, drive within the mileage limit, or can use favourable business tax treatment. In those cases the premium can be worth it.

What happens at the end of a car lease?

You return the car and pay any charges for excess mileage or wear, plus a disposition fee, unless you choose a buyout option to purchase it at the agreed residual value. Then you either lease or buy your next vehicle.
